Types of Roofing
Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roof shingles with over 75% of American roofs using this type of shingle. Their low cost, resiliency and ease of installation are all great benefits, plus they can be installed on basically any architectural style. Asphalt shingles are made of fiberglass mixed with asphalt and ceramic granules, and are not usually a recyclable material.
Asphalt shingles are Energy Star compliant, garnering you a rebate on your roof, and come in a variety of colors and price points. They are a bit thinner than other roofing options, but will last from 20 to 30 years or more. These shingles can be susceptible to storm damage, such as from high winds or hail.
Asphalt shingles can be laid in layers, to a point. If your existing roof is asphalt, you can add a new layer on top without problem in most cases. There are varying regulations and building codes on how many shingle layers can be placed before having to tear everything out and starting completely over. Getting more layers means heavier products, which may begin to compromise the roof framing.
Wood shingles and shakes are available in redwood, southern pine, cedar and other woods. Wood shingles are cut by a machine whereas wood shakes are handmade with a rougher look. More costly than asphalt, wood shingles are also more stylish. The type of wood chosen will determine the color and durability of this type of roof. Some cedar or redwood shingles can last 30 to 50 years. Be sure to check local building codes and these shingles’ fire ratings before planning to use wood or shake shingles.
Metal roofs are a very environmentally-friendly choice. They are also somewhat trending in new homes in recent years. Metal roofs come in copper, aluminum and stainless steel and are often made with a high percentage of recycled materials. These roofs can be made from materials ranging from solid metal to constructed metal, which will dictate the cost of the roof. This can be a most affordable type of roofing, or it can be one of the more expensive types depending on which metal you choose.
